Usage Of Saw Palmetto Extract For BPH

12/04/2022

Saw palmetto plant, which is sort of a dwarf palm tree, is known to grow in the warm climatic zones and sandy coastal lands of US, as well as in the West Indies. Also known by some other names like Serenoa repens, Sabal fructus and Sabal, Saw palmetto contains a wide variety of essential fatty acids, flavonoids, antioxidants and phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol as some of its active ingredients which make it all the more high on health-enhancing properties. The fruit part of this plant is often used in a variety of traditional herbal medications, to treat various health issues such as asthma, cold, cough and chronic bronchitis, pelvic pain, prostate cancer, hair loss and baldness, migraine, urinary tract problems, genital disorders, impotency, etc.

Saw palmetto has more

Saw palmetto also contains polysaccharides, a kind of sugar that helps provide relief from inflammation – one of the common causes behind various health problems these days. Owing to this particular property, saw palmetto is one plant that is gaining an especially distinct place both in the prevention and cure of what is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

BPH is a common prostate condition being faced by men all over the world, the symptoms of which particularly start to surface once they cross middle age. This particular problem concerns prostate, a small, walnut-sized gland which is primarily responsible for secreting, nourishing as well as protecting sperm cells in semen, and maintaining its fluidity. A person is alleged to have symptoms of BPH when his prostate gland begins to grow excessively in size, and the reasons are other than cancer.

As men age, testosterone, which is the key sex hormone in their body that regulates fertility and performs various other important actions, starts to accumulate in the prostate gland and convert itself into what is known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This gradual activity, over a period of time, causes the prostate cells to increase in number and eventually lead to enlargement of the gland. Any unusual inflammation of the prostate gland, which lies right below the urinary bladder and just in front of the rectum, has chances of causing severe urinary tract problems.

Signs and symptoms

Generally the signs and symptoms that show up in case of BPH include:

  • incomplete emptying of bladder,
  • dysuria or a burning sensation while urinating,
  • terminal dribbling,
  • nocturia, an excessive need to urinate during night-time
  • frequent and/or urgent need to urinate.

The mentioned situations could result in frequent infections and even bladder stones, in some cases. Also, an excessive presence of DHT hormone can itself lead to some serious health issues among men, which especially includes hair loss and premature balding.

Please note that BPH, which is becoming increasingly universal among men all over the world, can seriously affect our everyday lifestyle and overall quality of life. And since the problem is fairly treatable, steps must be taken to cure it in time, before it causes an irreversible damage to the health and well-being.

How Saw palmetto works?

It has been observed that the main action performed by saw palmetto is slowing down the production of an enzyme called 5-reductase. This enzyme is basically responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and saw palmetto manages to act right against the activities of this enzyme. Besides, it also helps increase the urine flow, promote libido and optimum sexual drive among men. Apart from boosting the production of reproductive hormones among males, saw palmetto extract also aids thyroid function, contributes to muscle growth and boosts the overall immune system.

Availability and usage

All natural and absolutely effective, saw palmetto extract is available for consumption in the form of tablets, whole berries, dried fruit, ground fruit extract, tablets, capsules as well as liquid extract which can even be added to tea. It is known to work just as effectively, if not any better, than those commercially available prescription medicines for prostate. The medical fraternity all over the world, especially that in the US and Europe, vouches for the exclusive range of benefits that saw palmetto has to offer in the treatment of BPH. Also, its effectiveness increases manifold when combined with certain other herbs such as curcumin or quercetin.

So if you wish to age gracefully and enjoy a good quality of life, go ahead and make your diet prostate friendly, by bringing in some saw palmetto!
