Does Turmeric Aid In Relieving Inflammatory Ailment Of Rheumatoid Arthritis?

19/02/2022

Unlike the NSAIDs and over the counter ointments and pain killers which are easily available and provide temporary relief to the inflammatory health condition of RA, but tend to affect our overall health in the long run; the natural herb of turmeric is a safe, effective and reasonable option. It essentially provides relief from deep within and helps to relax both the muscles and joints.

What makes it exceptional?

Interestingly, what makes turmeric all that popular is one of its active ingredients called Curcumin, which is basically yellow coloured chemical found in turmeric. This component is also what gives the herb its scientific name - Curcuma longa. And while we might think that the benefits of turmeric end quite here, it is amiable to note that the same curcumin also allows turmeric to exhibit some excellent medicinal properties as well. This miraculous compound is loaded with some potent health benefits which are indeed backed by science. It has the ability to not only prevent us against a wide range of health ailments, but also to heal and protect. This is because it can address health conditions ranging from some common and everyday ones to those that are rather serious and chronic, such as arthritis, heart diseases, obesity and even cancer to some extent.

Effective anti-inflammatory agent

One of the most prominent and promising properties of turmeric is to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent. Inflammation is basically our body’s natural response to prevent any damage being suffered by our tissues on account of infection or injuries. However, if the swelling is chronic, the natural process of inflammation could do more harm than good and lead to some serious health issues. Curcumin allows turmeric to be an effective and all-natural cure against the swelling and inflammation. Not only that, it also provides relief from the pain and discomfort associated with the same. And with turmeric, there’s really no chance of there being a side effect. This is primarily why turmeric, apart from being used as an oral and topical medicine in various traditional systems of medication including Ayurveda, it also appears as a prominent ingredient in a variety of ointments for pain and inflammation.

What is rheumatoid arthritis (RA)?

The term refers to this chronic inflammatory condition which slowly yet significantly damages health of the joints. This is an auto-immune disease, which, in layman terms, is caused owing to a mistaken response by our body’s own immune system. In case of RA, it is usually the joint lining which gets swollen and gradually damaged. Initially it could be only the joints of the wrists and hands / fingers which tend to get affected, and symptoms include swelling, stiffness and discomfort. This complex condition slowly spreads down to the joints of knees.

What happens in rheumatoid arthritis?

RA, a condition which affects an obscenely large number of people the world over, makes moving about and doing the simplest of chores all the more difficult for those of us who are virtually effected with this health ailment. This is mainly a progressive disease and can often last for years altogether, even resulting in a lifelong disability and affecting other areas of our body if ignored for long. Although it cannot be completely cured, we can, however, take measures to somewhat reduce the pain and swelling. That is precisely where the incredibly effective anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric come into play.

Other benefits of turmeric

  • This herb also happens to be loaded to the brim with the goodness of antioxidants. These antioxidants prevent our body against oxidation and free radical damage.
  • Turmeric also helps in boosting our immune system and equips our body to fight some minor to major diseases, much on its own.
  • Its healing properties promote health of the skin, thus allowing it to get rid of acne and look youthful, radiant and flawless.
