How Effect Of Serenoa Repens Helps In BPH?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition which results in a benign or non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland in men. This happens to be one of the most common conditions experienced by men over the age of 50. Global stats suggest that every second man above 50 complains of an enlarged BPH, and almost every man over the age of 80 inevitably may complain of this condition. This is because it is not only painful, discomforting and extremely irritating, but also affects the quality of life.

Causes and Symptoms

Men have this gland called prostate, which is present right below the urethra. This walnut-shaped gland is responsible for secreting semen, a fluid that helps protect the sperms. That is perhaps why prostate is an important part of the male reproductive system. The gland begins to grow during adolescence, but the problem here is that it never quite stops growing. By the time the middle age strikes, all other parts in the reproductive system, including the urethra, have matured and stopped growing any further. The prostate gland, on the contrary, continues to grow. Eventually, owing to its location, it starts pressing against the bladder. This results in obstructive urinary problems during urination. Gradually, the bladder becomes more and more sensitive to retaining the urine, and this sensitivity results in incontinence i.e. the inability to control the urge to urinate, even during the night. That is perhaps why men suffering from BPH are more likely to wet their beds, especially during sleep.

The enlargement begins to start from the age of 30, but it hardly shows any symptoms until the age of 45-50. Please note that BPH is generally a universal problem, and something that's a totally common form of ageing. It is not very serious, and it is definitely not life threatening.

The Signs / Symptoms That May Be Experienced

But it does get accompanied by a lot of nuisance and some extremely discomforting symptoms. Some of them include -

  • frequent urination,
  • difficulty to start urinating, even after pushing and applying pressure
  • burning sensation while urinating
  • a weak urine stream
  • the feeling that the bladder is still not empty, even after urination
  • dribbling
  • nocturia

Saw Palmetto Saves the Day

Serena Repens, also known as Saw Palmetto, is a short palm-like tree that is native to North America. It happens to be one of the most healing and therapeutic herbs when it comes to managing non-cancerous prostatic enlargement. It offers highly recommended and effective, plant-based remedies for prostate enlargement, and the studies conducted by various alternative systems of medications evidently back its benefits. The berries of this plant are used as supplements that offer relief from BPH based symptoms.

How It Works?

Saw palmetto's hormone blocking capabilities inhibit the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This reduces the size of the inner lining of the prostate. Further, its anti inflammatory properties go a long way in preventing the further enlargement of the gland, thus preventing it from pressing against the urethra and causing urinary discomfort. Those who have taken this supplement on regular basis have observed that it helps ease urinary symptoms, and reduces the need to frequently urinate at night. Also, the patients feel their bladder actually getting emptied, post urination.

It might take about five to six weeks for the supplements to show its effectiveness. It is more and less safe for consumption, but it is recommended to suggest your physician before introducing it to your diet. Consuming pumpkin seeds or using pumpkin seed oil along with regular usage of saw palmetto further enhances the effectiveness.

Other Natural Tips to Manage BPH

  • Green tea helps in building immunity and also in slowing down growth of the prostate gland. However, do not go too heavy on it as it contains caffeine, which has the potential to stimulate the urinary bladder.
  • Supplementing your diet with zinc can have a positive effect on those experiencing BPH. It reduces the urinary issues, and makes the condition more bearable.
  • Pumpkin seeds are another good option. These seeds contain a compound called beta-sitosterol, whose regular consumption helps increase the urine flow and does let the bladder get reasonably empty.
  • Avoid taking more of alcohol and caffeine, as they tend to stimulate the urinary bladder.
  • De-stress with yoga and exercise, as consistently fretting over something can also make us want to urinate more often.
  • Also avoid having too much water before hitting the bed at night.
