Turmeric And Other Natural Healthcare Remedies For Asthma

Breathing is something our life thrives upon. It has been rightly said that, “Breathing is the essence of life. Breathe deeply, live fully!” However, some of us tend to experience a chronic difficulty in breathing. This could indicate the possibility of this inflammatory disease called asthma.

What is asthma?

A chronic breathing disorder, asthma is a condition wherein the airways leading up to our lungs get somewhat narrowed and blocked. When a person is asthmatic or prone to asthma attacks, there is a possibility that his / her airways as well as the lining of the lungs have become swollen and therefore, narrowed. This prevent sufficient amount of air from reaching the lungs. The same also result in the lining of the airways excreting extra mucus, thus further narrowing the airways and blocking the path.

Causes

There could be various factors which could trigger this situation, such as an allergy to pollutants, dust mites, cigarette smoke, excessive air pollution, pets, pollen, changing weather or even viral and bacterial infections, etc. Sometimes, it could also be owed to an allergy to certain food items such as mushrooms, peanuts, etc. Not only this, the presence of excessive mucus could also be the reason behind asthmatic symptoms.

Home remedies for relief

While doctors obviously recommend certain everyday medications along with the use of an inhaler in case of a sudden asthmatic attack, there are a number of effective natural remedies we could adopt in order to relieve asthmatic symptoms. In fact, we could find solution right inside the kitchens of our homes, and fix ourselves a quick herbal DIY remedy for asthma. However, please note that none of these could be counted upon as a promising alternative treatment for asthma. They could, however, allow us to manage asthmatic symptoms to a great extent and prevent the associated uneasiness to quite a degree.

  • Honey - There is little wonder as to why honey would serve as an effective remedy for asthma, since it is also used in a variety of cough and cold syrups.
  • Figs - Having a couple of this particular dry fruit, soaked overnight, first thing in the morning goes a long way in treating the blocked and inflamed airways leading up to our lungs.
  • Mustard Oil - Mixed with camphor, you may apply some warm mustard oil all over your chest and massage it for a while. Repeat this activity several times a day till you start to feel the result, i.e. clearing airways. This would go a long way in promoting our lung function and inflammation.
  • Tea / Coffee - Regular intake of a nice, warm cup of coffee, or even black/green tea for that matter, helps unblock our airways and provide relief from the associated inflammation and improve the breathing function. Therefore, this might serve as a promising SOS option in case of asthmatic attacks.
  • Ginger - Their anti-inflammatory properties make ginger a much sought after herb as far as relieving our swollen airways are concerned.

Managing asthma using turmeric

Owing much to its anti-inflammatory properties, various traditional systems of medications, including Ayurveda, continue to suggest the use of turmeric in order to gain relief from asthmatic symptoms. This is because it could help provide a rather quick relief from acute inflammation of the airways. The same also provides relief from a tightened chest. Actually, the presence of antioxidants in curcumin (which is the active component of turmeric) significantly prevents the oxidative damage from taking place. Besides, it also contains some promising anti-allergy properties, that inhibit the allergic actions which could trigger an asthmatic attack in the first place. Lastly, turmeric also helps stimulate and regulate our body’s very own immune response, thus making it fit enough to fight the onset of asthma.

How does it help?

Turmeric, belonging to the ginger family, actually refers to the root of this perennial plant called as Curcuma longa. This magic of an herb contains what is known as curcumin. Curcumin, along with other bioactive compounds, renders turmeric all the healing properties it is known to possess, something which makes turmeric an incredible herb for enhancing health and wellness! We can consume turmeric in the form of turmeric tea / milk, or by adding good quality turmeric (preferably raw) powder to the beverages. On the other hand, adding the extract obtained from turmeric root in juices or taking some genuinely available herb extract might also be equally effective, if not more.
