Platelets are tiny blood cells that help to form a clot. In case of an injury or cut, platelets stick to each other as well as to the wall of the damaged blood vessel, thus forming a clot and stopping the cut from bleeding.
The normal platelet count ranges from150,000 to 250,000 per ?l of blood. However, certain diseases such as dengue infection, malaria etc. and some medicines such as anti cancer drugs, adversely affect production of platelets. For instance, the dengue virus destroys the body's capacity to produce new platelets and on getting infected a patient's platelet count starts falling. A platelet count below 100,000 per ?l (mm3) is alarming and immediate medical attention is required. In fact a platelet count below 50,000 can be fatal.
A fall in platelet count, which is medically termed as Thromocytopenia, prevents formation of clots. This leads to hemorrhage that causes both internal & external bleeding. Once bleeding starts, the situation becomes almost irrecoverable.
Fortunately, there are many natural ways to boost platelet production. Some of them are listed below:
Consuming foods that increase platelet count: Berries, green leafy vegetables, oranges, tomatoes and kiwis can help increase the platelet levels. Also foods that contain omega-3 fatty acid such as fish, free-range eggs, flax seed oil, tuna, and wild salmon boost your immune system and can naturally increase the platelet count. On the contrary, processed foods, refined sugars, junk food, alcohol and caffeinated beverages cause the platelet count to drop even further because they can hamper their production in the bone marrow.
Vitamin and mineral supplements can help: An ideal option is to supplement your diet with vitamins and minerals, since they strengthen the immune system and can boost the platelet count naturally.
UPLAT, an enigmatic platelet booster, is highly recommended: Uplat, an orally administered prescription dietary supplement, is being widely used for management of Thrombocytopenia. It is a rich source of complex biochemical constituents that helps boost platelet production by stimulating the bone marrow cells. Uplat is a natural remedy which works wonders without causing any side effects.
Papaya Leaf Extract: Drinking bitter extract from papaya leaves is believed to enhance platelet production. Procure papaya leaves, mash them with a mortar, and drink the extract. Two leaves should yield 2 tbsp. of extract.
