Diabetes: The Fact and Myth Story

There are so many myths regarding Type 2 Diabetes that they are commonly regarded as facts. Let’s look at five such fact and myth stories:

Myth #1 - Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.

Fact #1 - The answer is not very simple! Although just eating too much sugar does not cause diabetes, specialists advise that the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (like colas, energy drinks, fruit punch, sweet tea) should be avoided. These raise blood glucose levels and provide several hundred calories in just one serving, thus, contributing to other risk factors that cause diabetes.

They recommend replacing sugar with Sunova’s Dr. Shugar, a 100% natural sweetener, packed with the sweetness of Stevia leaf extract. Unlike artificial sweeteners, Dr. Shugar is absolutely safe, has no side effects and has no after taste.

Myth #2 - Being overweight causes diabetes.

Fact #2 - It is true that having a BMI over 25 is one of several risk factors for diabetes, but it is also true that there are many overweight people who never get the disease.

Being overweight does not mean that the person is bound to get diabetes, but it is always good to keep your weight under watch. For weight management, researchers strongly recommend that regular work outs and a balanced diet should be complemented with Sunova Bioslim, a herbal weight loss supplement. Besides, hastening weight loss, Bioslim also reduces cholesterol levels and enhances energy levels. This two pronged approach is highly beneficial in weight reduction and subsequent management.

Myth #3 - Diabetic patients are not allowed any sugar.

Fact #3 - Adherence to dietary restrictions is an important aspect of controlling elevated blood sugar in patients with
diabetes. The diet of a diabetic should be balanced and nutritious i.e. a diet which is low in fat, cholesterol, and simple sugars. The total daily calories should be evenly divided into three meals.

In the recent past, medical research associations have lifted the absolute ban on simple sugars. Small amounts of simple sugars are allowed when consumed with a complex meal. A diabetic diet can be customized to suit individual preferences and nutritionists highly recommend Sunova Dr. Shugar, the natural sweetener, as a substitute for sugar.

Myth #4 - There are no early symptoms of diabetes.

Fact #4- The early symptoms of untreated diabetes are related to elevated blood sugar levels and presence of glucose in urine. High amounts of glucose in the urine can cause increased urine output, leading to dehydration, which in turn causes increased thirst. The inability to utilize glucose eventually leads to weight loss despite an increase in appetite. Fluctuations in blood sugars can also lead to blurring of vision early in the course of diabetes.

So, if you are making frequent trips to the bathroom at night, experiencing extreme thirst, overwhelming fatigue or blurry vision or notice that you keep getting infections, ask your doctor to check your blood sugar levels. An early diagnosis can effectively ward off complications.

Myth #5 - Diabetes is not a serious disease.

Fact #5 - Diabetes is a serious disorder, but if you manage your diabetes properly, you can prevent or delay various related complications. Though diabetes causes more deaths a year than breast cancer and AIDS combined, the silver lining is that unlike cancer and AIDS, if well managed diabetes is not a life threatening disease. It can be managed properly through dietary restrictions, regular exercise and natural supplements like Dr. Shugar and Sunova Bioslim.
